Ringhäälingunõukogu (Estonian Broadcasting Council)
As the highest authority of Eesti Raadio (Estonian Radio) and Eesti Televisioon (Estonian Television), it exercises supervision over performance of the public broadcasting functions. On the proposal of the Riigikogu (the Parliament of Estonia) Cultural Affairs Committee, the Riigikogu appoints five members of the Broadcasting Council from among the members of the Parliament (on the basis of the principle of political balance) and four members of the Broadcasting Council from among recognised specialist in the related fields relating for the performance of public broadcasting functions, for a term of five years.
Tarbijakaitseamet (Estonian Consumer Protection Board)
Established in 1994, the Board is a national authority the main task of which is to protect the legitimate rights of consumers and to represent their interests, to develop and implement consumer policy in accordance with the provisions of the UN Guidelines, of the Consumer Protection Act and of European Union consumer policy.
Self-regulation bodies
Eesti Reklaamiagentuuride (ERAL) (Estonian Association of Advertising Agencies)
ERAL was formed in 1998 and brings together well-known and largest advertising agencies in Estonia. It is set up and funded by the advertising industry to apply code and rules regulating advertising content. The purpose of ERAL is to protect common interests and secure the rights of members of the association, regulation of professional ethics, and promotion of advertising-related activity.
Estonian system of self-regulation is currently under development.
